Abstract
Valproate is an effective GABAergic anticonvulsant with a broad range of antiepileptic activity. There is increasing evidence that valproate may be effective on some psychiatric disorders, particularly bipolar and schzzoaffective disorders. By its facilitatory effects on GABA, valproate may counteract the increased dopaminergic activity in schzophrenia.
We report a case of schzophrenia responded to the combination of valproate and haloperidol and reveiw therapertic effects, mechanism of actions and clinical uses of valproate in schzophrenia.
